Spa day in the ICU

M.E. got the "girl" treatment this morning. Mary Alice, Kathy Gillespie, Diane Cruikshank and I waited until physical therapy came to work with M.E. Once they had her bed fully upright we shampooed her hair, treated her fingernails, lotioned her legs, and gave her a modified facial. She looked great. We are trying several different things to stimulate M.E.'s mind. Today we tried a lollipop and a peppermint stick to taste (just briefly) and some familiar scents on cotton balls to smell. Kathy brought a tennis ball and rolled it around in her hands. M.E. was upright for one hour and tolerated it well. During the activity, she appeared to really be trying to get her eyes open. Her right lid would open slightly from time to time.

Dave (hubby) joked with Dave (nurse) this afternoon about the strength in M.E.'s ankles. When her ankles are moved, the right is tighter than the left so Dave (hubby) nicknamed her as "righty tighty, and lefty loosey".

It looks like she will remain in the unit for a day or two more. They may start another medication to stimulate her brain to wake up, and it might be best to have her there for that. Otherwise, her lab work is good and her vital signs are stable. Dave is in regular contact with Caitlin and Paul. Dave's sister in law will arrive on Sunday for several days. Caitlin and Paul will be home again over Labor Day weekend.

Dave wanted me to express how much the meals, calls, prayers, and time spent with M.E. means their family. This outpouring of support really deepens the meaning of "family".
